4 House Democrats move to condemn socialism, DSA in resolution
Caroline MolloyFour Democratic members of the U.S. House proposed an amendment Aug. 31 that would condemn socialism and the Democratic Socialists of America while removing election-related provisions from a Republican resolution.
Reps. Josh Gottheimer of New Jersey, Hillary Scholten of Michigan, Jared Moskowitz of Florida and Tom Suozzi of New York submitted the amendment to H. Res. 1490, a resolution introduced by Republican Rep. Jeff Crank of Colorado.
The Republican measure condemns socialism and the DSA while also supporting enactment of legislation involving proof of citizenship for voter registration and voter identification.
The Democratic amendment sought to replace that language with a resolution focused specifically on socialism and the DSA. Its proposed text cited historical examples of communist and socialist governments and condemned a number of policies associated with the DSA.
The four lawmakers argued that the election provisions should be considered separately rather than included in a resolution intended to address socialism. The Republican-led House Rules Committee did not make the Democratic amendment available for consideration on the House floor.
