President of US bishops’ conference issues statement after election, calls for unity and prayer

Archbishop Timothy P. Broglio of the Archdiocese for the Military Services, the president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB), issued a November 6 statement in response to the results of the 2024 U.S. presidential election.

Archbishop Broglio first congratulated President-elect Donald Trump and all elected officials at the national, state, and local levels.

“Now, we move from campaigning to governing,” the Archbishop said, noting that as citizens of a democracy, we can “rejoice in our ability to transition peacefully from one government to the next.”

The Archbishop reaffirmed the Catholic Church’s position of nonpartisanship, stating that the Church and the USCCB are not aligned with any political party.

Regardless of who holds the presidency or the majority in Congress, “the Church’s teachings remain unchanged,” he said.

“We bishops look forward to working with the people’s elected representatives to advance the common good of all,” Archbishop Broglio added. “As Christians, and as Americans, we have the duty to treat each other with charity, respect, and civility, even if we may disagree on how to carry out matters of public policy.”
