Archbishop Gomez: After election, Church must continue proclaiming Gospel

On November 6, Archbishop Jose Gomez of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles reminded Catholics that after the election, the Church’s mission remains the same: “We’re here to proclaim the Gospel, save souls, and build God’s kingdom.”

The Archbishop wrote in Angelus News that many people are bitter and angry after the election and that politics alone cannot solve man’s deepest problems.

“Underlying our political debates are issues that are spiritual, moral, and existential,” he continued.

He stated young people sense that something is wrong with the modern way of life, and they are ultimately looking for community, relationship, and moral direction.

“People need Jesus, and they need his Church,” Archbishop Gomez wrote.

He urged Catholics to bear witness, as Jesus asked his first followers.

“So we must be the ones to show our neighbors that life can be good; that love, joy, and beauty are possible if we follow Jesus and his path for our lives.”

The Archbishop then reminded the faithful that man is more than an organism or machine. “We are children of God, created in his image,” he wrote, “made with bodies and souls and the will to love; each of us is given a destiny to share in God’s own divine life.”
