After elections, Oklahoma lawmakers prepare for challenging 2025 legislative session

In January, the world of the state Capitol changes:

New House speaker. New Senate pro tempore. A large class of inexperienced lawmakers. A lame duck governor, needing a legacy.
The 2025 Legislative session, many observers say, will be difficult. Debates about tax policy — and the possibility of reducing taxes — are expected to take center stage, along with more calls for immigration reform, changes to the judiciary and a new set of spending priorities.

Fresh off major Republican victories on the state and national levels, 16 new Oklahoma lawmakers – five of them in the House and 11 in the Senate – will join 138 others for the first session of the 60th Oklahoma Legislature. While Republicans remain firmly in control of both houses of the Legislature, the large number of new lawmakers means the experience level in both chambers has dropped.
