Gov. Gavin Newsom approves $90M in funding for Planned Parenthood
California Gov. Gavin Newsom, a Democrat, signed a bill on Feb. 11 providing $90 million in taxpayer funding for Planned Parenthood months after federal lawmakers moved to stop Medicaid dollars from flowing to the abortion giant.
“California is taking steps to ensure people don’t lose access to the range of services provided by Planned Parenthood,” Newsom said in a press release. “As the Trump administration’s Big Ugly Bill punishes women and community health providers, California continues to stand in support of women’s access to essential health services and reproductive freedom.”
The “One Big Beautiful Bill,” which President Donald Trump signed July 4, 2025, included a one-year ban on Medicaid funding for tax-exempt abortion providers that received more than $800,000 in Medicaid funds during fiscal year 2023. Planned Parenthood said that 23 of its facilities have closed as a result of the bill, Zeale News previously reported.
Newsom signed the bill, S.B. 106, authored by Democratic state Sen. John Laird, shortly after lawmakers passed it in both chambers of the state legislature on Feb. 9. According to Newsom’s press release, California has provided $145 million in funding since fall 2025 to support the state’s Planned Parenthood facilities.
According to a fact sheet published by Planned Parenthood in 2025, there are seven Planned Parenthood affiliates in California, and they operate 115 facilities.
Pro-life lawmakers and advocates criticized S.B. 106, arguing that California should prioritize struggling hospitals and maternity care rather than direct millions more to abortion providers.
“Right now, over 60 hospitals in the state of California are on the verge of shutting down, and they have to ask for a hospital distress loan,” Assemblymember David Tangipa, a Republican, said during a Feb. 9 debate on the bill.
He added that one in five hospitals is at risk of closing in the state, and asked, “Why does Planned Parenthood get a $90 million grant?”
