2022 CDC abortion data: slight drop from previous year with reversal of Roe v. Wade
The number of nationwide abortions slightly dropped between 2021 and 2022, according to recently released data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
FOX News noted that the slight drop coincided with the reversal of Roe v. Wade in June 2022, which returned the regulation of abortion back to the individual states.
Between 2021 and 2022, the abortion rate dropped by 3%, the abortion ratio decreased by 2%, and the overall number of abortions nationwide dropped 2% as well, going from about 622,000 to 609,000.
The abortion rate measures the number of abortions per 1,000 women aged 15 to 44 years, and the abortion ratio measures the number of abortions per 1,000 live births, according to the CDC. The data from 2022 followed several trends from previous years. Over half of the women obtaining abortions were in their 20s, and almost all abortions (92.8%) were performed when the baby was 13 weeks old or younger. Over half (53.3%) of the abortions were early medication abortions, up 4% from 2021.
Abortion continued to disproportionately affect black women in 2022, as they had the highest overall abortion percentage, abortion rate, and abortion ratio of all surveyed racial groups. Black women accounted for 39.5% of reported abortions, while their abortion rate measured at 24.4 abortions per 1,000 women and the ratio measured at 429 abortions per 1,000 live births.
